Chukar, a bit of Training and More Chukar!

Winter is right around the corner. What does that mean at Half Moon Gamebirds? That means it's time for our first over-winter hatch. Mark has set the eggs in the incubators for a Spring ready flock of Chukar Partridge. This will be our second year hatching over Thanksgiving time. This year will be especially fun as we will be hosting our family get together. Along with a bit of hunting for the crew, the chicks should be making their appearance that weekend too. With a bevy of people (and hopefully without the aid of the dogs) we should be able to transition them to the brooder building no problems.

Our last hatch was an astonishing 80% with our new incubator. While we don't expect to get that same rate (especially since so many factors should be considered, like quality of eggs, shipping conditions, and incubator failure, etc.), we still are working to make sure our part in the hatching process is pretty close to flawless. Weather conditions have been fantastic, so we are hoping for great things. Meanwhile....

The great weather makes for great training conditions. Mark has been starting Beulah (the puppy we kept from Leena and Oscar's litter) on a bit of training. Here you can see her with one of our Bobwhite quail. We check in with her sister's owners every once in a while. We love seeing what they have been doing and how they are growing. Hopefully we can post a few photos soon.

So what to do with those Chukar Partridge after that great training session with your dog? Here is a recipe I have found online that I am anxious to try out. It involves grilling and I am hoping that we can get in while the weather is still mild. It's Grilled Chukar with Fresh Chimichurri by the group over at Hunt To Eat. It's a new site that I have found and can't wait to try out even more of their recipes. - Bon Appetit! #halfmoongamebirds
